Abstract
महाभारत भारतीय सभ्यता के सामाजिक, राजनीतिक, आर्थिक तथा सांस्कृतिक जीवन का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण ऐतिहासिक एवं साहित्यिक स्रोत है। यद्यपि इसे मुख्यतः एक महाकाव्य के रूप में जाना जाता है, तथापि इसमें वर्णित नगरों, राजधानियों, व्यापारिक मार्गों, शिल्पकारों, व्यापारिक समुदायों तथा बाजार व्यवस्था का अध्ययन तत्कालीन नगरीय अर्थव्यवस्था के स्वरूप को समझने में अत्यन्त उपयोगी सिद्ध होता है। प्रस्तुत शोध-पत्र का उद्देश्य महाभारत में वर्णित नगरीय अर्थव्यवस्था के विभिन्न आयामों व्यापार, शिल्प, बाजार व्यवस्था, श्रेणी संगठन, कर व्यवस्था तथा कृषि अधिशेष का ऐतिहासिक विश्लेषण करना है। अध्ययन में महाभारत को प्राथमिक स्रोत के रूप में तथा प्राचीन भारतीय इतिहास, पुरातत्त्व एवं आर्थिक इतिहास से सम्बन्धित प्रमाणिक ग्रन्थों और शोध-पत्रों को द्वितीयक स्रोत के रूप में उपयोग किया गया है। अध्ययन से स्पष्ट होता है कि महाभारतकालीन नगर केवल राजनीतिक सत्ता के केन्द्र नहीं थे, बल्कि वे उत्पादन, विनिमय, व्यापार, उद्योग तथा प्रशासन के संगठित आर्थिक केन्द्र भी थे। इन नगरों में विकसित बाजार व्यवस्था, शिल्प संगठन, कर प्रणाली तथा व्यापारिक मार्गों का अस्तित्व तत्कालीन भारतीय नगरीकरण की परिपक्व आर्थिक संरचना का परिचायक है।
